Mobile phone theft is a common problem in Bangladesh, with many phones being stolen and only a small percentage recovered. 
How mobile phones are stolen
  • Public transportation: Thieves board buses and create disturbances to target passengers. 
  • Footpaths: Young men who don't stay long are suspected of stealing phones from shopkeepers and passersby. 
  • Special software: Gangs use software to change the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) of stolen phones. 
How police respond
  • Police have recovered stolen phones and returned them to owners. 
  • Police have arrested members of mobile phone theft gangs. 
  • Police have recovered money that was embezzled from people's accounts by fraudsters posing as customer care representatives. 
Tips to prevent theft
  • Be alert when getting on or off buses. 
  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially in areas with a history of theft. 
  • If your phone is stolen, try to find out who has it and report it to the authorities.
